A conglomerate of Asian clothing industry manufacturers has announced the successful breeding of the world’s first sheep to produce a 100% polyester fleece.
‘Polly’ was created by altering the genome of a Merino sheep so that its hair (wool) follicles produce polyethylene terephthalate instead of traditional wool.
Prolonged her life cycle
Head of the project Dr Tuo Zhen Ri proudly introduced Polly to the press.”Polly is the result
of many years of work. We have sped up the rate at which her fleece can grow, she can
produce up to 8 fleeces a year, we’ve also managed to prolong her life cycle so she will live
for more than 40 years.
This means as many as 320 polyester fleeces in her lifetime rather
than the average of 6 wool fleeces for her breed.”
Animal welfare activists have declared the project an abomination without any benefit to the environment.
I think we’ve nailed it!
Dr Ri brushed aside any doubts adding “Obviously we can still make polyester in the
traditional way but that’s not the point here, we wanted to create something which is exactly
the same as polyester but for which we can charge an insulting amount of money for and I
think we’ve nailed it!”
The first clothing manufactured with Pollys’ maiden fleece will be gifted to various celebrities
for promotional videos. A range of underwear has been designed for a launch to take place
later in the year with a pack of 3 mens boxer shorts priced at $365
