Swansea Zoo in Wales, UK has defended its decision to continue holding cage fighting events using its large meerkat mob.
The weekly events feature multiple fights and have attracted huge crowds of mostly intoxicated young men who cheer along their favourite fighters while the meerkats fight mostly to the death.
VICIOUS AND AGGRESSIVE
The zoo public relations officer Hester Tisias said “We understand some people will not like it but that’s fine. What they need to understand is these young male meerkats are just absolutely gagging to rip a face off, it’s what they do. We’ve had 2 incidents in the past of a meerkat tearing off a keeper’s nose but since starting the organised events the meerkats are saving their aggression for the ring, they are extremely competitive.”
Meerkats are one of the most vicious and aggressive animals known to man. In the wild they roam their territory in gangs and tear apart anything that crosses their path including larger animals such as rhino and giraffe, they then wear the skins and hides of the defeated enemy as a warning to others.
