Birmingham City Council have made the extraordinary announcement that they plan to mine for gold directly underneath the City Centre and in doing so completely destroy 90 square miles of buildings and infrastructure.
The discovery was initially made several years ago but it’s taken this long to get Westminster’s approval on the plans.
DECISION HAS BEEN MADE
Birmingham mayor Ruth Troyston spoke to us after releasing the statement. “We understand that people may be a bit upset but the decision has been made and it is final. Our historic city is home to some of the world’s most beautiful architecture and incredible museums, it is a hub for international trade with brand new transport links with sustainable housing and is a retail hotspot. Unfortunately none of that matters when its all standing on a Trillion bloody quid of gold.”
Asked what will happen to the 1 million residents currently living there she said “ Obviously they will be removed, those that wish to return once mining is over will be given temporary tent accommodation on the outskirts of the city although it may be up to 25 years until we have extracted every last penny”
WORTH IT TO LEVEL THE PLACE
We called local councillor Doris Thutston for Edgbaston who along with all other local councillors in Birmingham have formed a mining cooperative which will be running the entire operation. She told us “I grew up here, went to school here and have worked tirelessly for the people of Edgbaston & Birmingham for 30 years. I know the city like the back of my hand and I can tell you unequivocally its worth it to totally level the place”.
