Labour Under Pressure To Relieve Overcrowded Prisons. Inmates To Serve 1/500th Of Their Sentence.

Labour Under Pressure To Relieve Overcrowded Prisons. Inmates To Serve 1/500th Of Their Sentence.

With the UK prison population approaching 100,000, government ministers are proposing drastic measures to reduce numbers.
Building new prisons or driving proven rehabilitation techniques would cost money and it has been proven by the covid pandemic that the government can’t just magic billions of pounds out of nowhere.

Prisons minister Terisa Lyon MP spoke to Newsishy about the state of our prison system and the latest idea:
“We are at breaking point and incarcerations are only increasing, if we don’t act now there will be dangerous criminals walking the streets instead of serving sentences.”

IMMEDIATELY RELEASING

How are you going to solve this?
“We will be reducing all prison sentences to 1/500th of the original and immediately releasing any who have already served their term. Prisoners serving whole life sentences will not be included.”

Correct me if I’m wrong but wouldn’t that release almost every prisoner in the uk?
“Exactly, there’s about 70 serving a whole life, so apart from them the lot will be walking out, freeing over 95,000 spaces. It will be a few years before the prisons fill up again and by that time it won’t be our problem”

You mean Labours problem?
“Yes, let Reform deal with it”

This would release tens of thousands of dangerous and violent criminals onto our streets, don’t you think that will be a problem?
“Not at all, it’s not like we won’t have the space to lock them up again and it will only be around 50% reoffending so everyone’s happy”
